“What are your most memorable moments at Duke?”

Here’s a personal one. Prior to stepping foot on campus, I had made a pact with myself that I would take Jay Williams’ position as projected starting point guard. I had never seen him play. So in my mind, I’m thinking, “He’s just some overrated guy from New Jersey.” I had been working extremely hard all Summer and felt like I was in the best shape of my life.

My first day on campus, after unloading etc., we went over to Cameron for some pickup games. So now is my big moment. This one pickup game would set the tone of me by establishing my dominance. Well, we all have dreams don’t we?

Needless to say, I walked away from that pickup game swearing I had just played against Oscar Robertson. He literally cleaned up the floor with me for the entire 2 hours. I felt much better when the season started and I witnessed him doing the same thing to all the other point guards in the country.

Don’t get me wrong, I won my share of battles in practice as time progressed, but little did I know, Jay Williams was on his way to being one of the best players in NCAA History, and there was nothing I could do about it but help prepare him as best I could.
