I would have applied myself more (athletically, academically, and even socially). I worked very, very hard at the things that were required. However, I did not work as hard on the “extra” things.
I’m very proud of what I accomplished while there given my circumstances. But, as an adult, father, and coach looking back, I don’t feel I took full advantage of all the opportunities. But c’est la vie! Most of the time, you don’t realize what you’ve got until it’s all over. So I try to preach to my kids and players as much as I can that this type of regret is one of the toughest things to live with. Knowing that you could have tried a little harder or focused a little more will haunt you for a long time.
